文部科学省では、科学技術に関する研究開発、理解増進等において顕著な成果を収めた者を「科学技術分野の文部科学大臣表彰」として顕彰してきており、昨年4月7日に令和2年度科学技術分野の文部科学大臣表彰受賞者が決定しました.生産技術研究所の水谷司 先生は、萌芽的な研究、独創的視点に立った研究等、高度な研究開発能力を示す顕著な研究業績をあげた40歳未満の若手研究者が対象となる「文部科学大臣表彰若手科学者賞」を下記の業績により受賞されました。


On April 14, 2020, Assoc. Prof. Tsukasa Mizutani received the MEXT Young Scientists’ Prize for his achievements in “Research on Innovative Measurement and Information Processing Technology for Understanding the Condition of Infrastructure”.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has been honoring individuals who have made outstanding achievements in research and development, and promotion of understanding of science and technology as the “Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”, and on April 7, 2020, the winners of the prize were selected. Assoc. Prof. Tsukasa Mizutani of the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) is one of them.

Title of achievement: “Research on innovative measurement and information processing technology for understanding the condition of infrastructure”
The conditions of a vast number of infrastructures and the natural environment influence the safety and security of our life enormously. Associate Professor Mizutani has developed advanced technology for low-cost, wide-area, real-time detection of heavy rainfall and construction of “three-dimensional ground-surface geospatial information” at the national level by utilizing existing communication antennas, ranging lasers and ground-penetrating radars that can collect surface and internal information of infrastructure at high speed while driving on vehicles, and by processing the measurement signals in a highly automated manner. This research is expected to bring about a paradigm shift in technology for understanding the condition of infrastructure and the natural environment.
